Sulawesi snails (Tylomelania sp/Rabbit snails/Elephant snail)

Of all the freshwater snails, the Sulawesi snails (Tylomelania sp/Rabbit snails/Elephant snail) are our favorite. This freshwater snail comes in many different shapes and colors and is quite large (6 to 7 cm). They have a striking ”elephant snout” and large walking foot with which they dig through the aquarium. With good care, they are active snails that are a real addition to the aquarium.
Although they are great fun to keep in an aquarium, they do require a lot of careful care. Where most snails survive on algae and waste from the aquarium, we feed these snails with their own food. It is very important that they really get a number of nutrients. That is why we have put together a varied menu for them. They do well on that and we try to offer the following products as varied as possible:
- Soft aquarium plants
- Red beet sticks
- Blanched vegetables (such as peas, carrots, kale), these have a high calcium content and are very important for the snails (snail shell).
- Snailstixx (Dennerle Shrimp King)
- Algae

The Sulawesi snail needs a lot of space. An aquarium tank of at least 60 cm is therefore desirable. They like warm temperatures between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. Below 25 degrees Celsius you will see that they feel less well. They become less active and mainly lie still in their house. So try to keep a constant warm temperature. The pH can best be kept between 7 and 8.5.
The Sulawesi snail is an ovoviviparous snail. They only get 1 young a few times a year. Reproduction can therefore sometimes be quite difficult. The advantage of this is that it never becomes a snail plague. They are quite social animals and they regularly seek contact with each other. It is therefore better to keep at least 2, so that they have company.
