Building the chicken coop; housing for sabre-legged bantam chickens
In order to have enough space for our chickens, we decided to demolish our current chicken coop and replace it with a larger one. We would like to share the process with you building the chicken coop.
After clearing the back corner of our garden, we started laying concrete slabs to create a level surface for the night shelter and for the run.

After the tiles were laid, the support beams could be placed. We placed the horizontal bottom beams first. These were supported with stones.

After this we placed the vertical support beams. As a night shelter we had chosen a garden shed from Gamma. Here we sawed out a door with a jigsaw and this way we can easily go through the large door to collect eggs and clean them.

As for the door, we didn’t want to make it too complicated and came across complete door constructions on the internet. These don’t cost much and save a lot of effort and time with doors.

After this it was time for the roof. To ensure good drainage, we sloped the support beams at a slight angle. Above this we placed corrugated sheets.

For the night shelter we had made our own nesting boxes from cheap boxes. With stairs and chicken perches each nesting box is accessible for the chickens.

After adding some nice personal details to the chicken coop, it is really finished! Very happy with the result. It has become a cozy chicken coop with enough space and easy to maintain.
